Typical costs for an ambulance in Switzerland
The cost of an ambulance in Switzerland can be surprisingly high, but a trip to the hospital is often life-saving. What many people don't know is that a single trip can cost between a few hundred and several thousand francs
Quick overview
What matters before you switch
Ambulance rides in Switzerland can quickly cost four-digit amounts. The basic insurance only covers a limited part, which is why without suitable additional cover you often have to pay a large amount of your own contribution.
- In the event of illness, basic insurance usually only pays 50 percent up to fixed annual limits.
- After an accident, the accident insurance is often responsible if you have sufficient insurance through your employer.
- Additional outpatient insurance can cover transport and rescue costs much better.

Typical costs for an ambulance in Switzerland
For a distance of 50 kilometers, the cost of an ambulance in Switzerland ranges from around CHF 1,000 in cantons with subsidies (e.g. Aargau) to around CHF 2,150 in cantons that pass the full costs on to patients (e.g. St. Gallen). Most cantons are in the range of CHF 1,500-1,600 - Zurich averages CHF 1,500 and Lucerne averages CHF 1,560. Rural areas are often more expensive because there are no subsidies (Kägi, SRF).
Who pays the ambulance bill?
Whether the insurance covers the costs depends on two crucial questions:
- Was the ambulance needed because of an accident or illness?
- If it was an accident: Do you work at least eight hours a week for the same employer?
If the operation took place after an accident
You work ≥ 8 hours per week for one employer - you are automatically insured through accident insurance (UVG / LAA). The accident insurance covers the costs, you don't have to pay a deductible or a deductible. In this case, the costs for the ambulance in Switzerland are effectively zero because UVG covers everything.
You work < 8 hours per week or are self-employed without UVG protection - in this case, the basic insurance (LAMal) covers the accident costs; these are treated as medical costs (see next section).
Important:The UVG pays up to CHF 29,640 for accidents abroad. Anything beyond that – as well as rescues abroad due to illness – requires supplementary insurance. In practice, the cost of an ambulance transport in Switzerland after a trip abroad can quickly rise to tens of thousands of francs.
If the deployment was due to an illness
Basic insurance (LAMal) covers the costs proportionately, but only up to certain maximum limits:
You refunded50%of the invoice, but only up to two annual limits:
- CHF 500 for medical transport (non-life-threatening situations).
- CHF 5,000 for rescues (life-threatening situations) within Switzerland.
Before LAMal pays anything, you must first pay yourannual deductiblewhich can be between CHF 300 and CHF 2,500. After that you pay an additional one10% personal contributionon all medical costs up to the maximum deductible of CHF 700 for adults. In a non-life-threatening situation, the actual cost of the ambulance can easily be over CHF 800.
Important:LAMal does not undertake rescues abroad due to illness. Supplementary travel or international health insurance can be very helpful here to cover the high costs of an ambulance in Switzerland after an emergency abroad.
Example 1 – Heart attack rescue (life-threatening)
Ambulance bill:CHF 3,000
Your deductible:CHF 2,500 – You have not had any medical costs this year, so the deductible is completely open. The actual cost of the ambulance depends on how much of the CHF 3,000 is credited to your deductible.
- Basic insurance takes over50%for rescues (up to CHF 5,000 per year).
- 50% of CHF 3,000 = CHF 1,500– that would be the share of LAMal.
- BUT– since your deductible is CHF 2,500 and has not yet been used, this CHF 1,500 will be credited towards the deductible (there is no refund).
Result:You pay the whole thingCHF 3,000itself. The effective cost of the ambulance in this case is CHF 3,000, as CHF 1,500 is not covered and CHF 1,500 is credited towards the deductible.
Example 2 – Dialysis transport (not life-threatening)
Ambulance bill:CHF 800
Your deductible:CHF 2,500 – no costs yet this year, so the deductible is open. Transportation hits your deductible first.
- Basic insurance takes over50%for medical transport (up to CHF 500 per year).
- 50% of CHF 800 = CHF 400– that is the proportion of LAMal.
- BUT– since the deductible is open, this CHF 400 will be credited towards the deductible (no refund).
Result:You pay the whole thingCHF 800. The effective cost of the ambulance in this case is CHF 800, as CHF 400 is not covered and CHF 400 is credited towards the deductible.
With supplementary insurance, you can avoid these deductibles and save CHF 1,500 in the event of a heart attack or CHF 400 in the event of dialysis. This significantly reduces the costs of ambulances in Switzerland.
Both health and accident insurers can refuse benefits if they do not consider the trip to be medically necessary. For example, if you could have safely taken a car or public transport. Even in such cases, you may still incur small costs for the ambulance.
Why supplementary insurance makes sense
Supplementary outpatient insurance can close these gaps by:100%which covers the costs of ambulances and rescues in Switzerland and abroad. This way you avoid any costs that KVG/LAMal does not cover.
Premiums usually start at around CHF 10 per month, depending on age, canton of residence and scope of services. When comparing offers, you should pay particular attention to how ambulance costs are covered in Switzerland and abroad.
Many supplementary insurance policies also offer other benefits, such as:
- Coverage for alternative treatments
- Coverage for additional medications
- Coverage for preventive medical examinations
- Hospital room upgrades
For a fair price, you not only receive comprehensive ambulance protection, but also an extended service package.
