What happens after you move: taking up residence, signing up within three months, cover backdated to day one

Three months to act
  1. You move in

You move to Switzerland and register with your municipality.

  2. You sign up

Within three months you choose your basic health insurance.

  3. You are covered

Cover is backdated to the day you took up residence.

Important after your move

Three months – and cover is backdated.

Anyone taking up residence in Switzerland has to sign up with a health insurer within three months. It does not happen automatically through your employer or your municipality. Meet the deadline and your cover applies retroactively from the day you took up residence – as do the premiums. Miss it without an excusable reason and you are only covered from the day you join, plus a premium surcharge.

How much time do you have left?

Enter your move-in date – a planned one works too. We will work out by when you have to sign up.

No prior knowledge needed

You do not have to understand the Swiss system already.

Five decisions stand between you and being insured. We walk you through each one.

Basic insurance

It is mandatory, and its benefits are set by law – identical at every insurer. You are accepted regardless of your age or health.

Deductible

The amount you pay yourself each year before your insurer steps in. Between CHF 300 and CHF 2’500 for adults, CHF 0 to CHF 600 for children. A higher deductible means a lower premium and more risk on you.

Insurance model

It decides who you turn to first. The standard model lets you choose any doctor; family doctor, HMO and telemedicine models set a first point of contact and cost less in return.

Accident cover

Whether you need it in your health insurance depends on your work situation: employees working enough hours are usually covered through their employer.

Supplementary insurance

Voluntary and separate from basic insurance. Unlike basic insurance there is no obligation to accept you – insurers may ask about your health.

Nexin only asks the questions that matter for your situation.

What Nexin takes off your plate if you would rather not work through the system yourself.

Explained plainly

Clear explanations in German and English instead of insurance jargon.

Matched to where you live

Premiums are calculated per canton and premium region and differ considerably across Switzerland.

Everyone in one go

Add your partner and children in a single process instead of organising each contract separately.

Application prepared

Enter your details once – we carry them into the application.

Real people

When you are unsure, a real contact takes over, by phone or video.

Transparent

We disclose our recommendations, our compensation and the insurers we considered.

Trust you can verify.

Nexin Group GmbH is listed as an untied insurance intermediary in the public register of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA and is therefore legally obliged to act in your interest. That means transparent guidance, without being tied to a single insurer.

Verify the FINMA entry

FINMA-registered

Untied insurance intermediaries must appear in the public register. The register exists precisely so you can check – Nexin is listed there under registration number F01560465.

Independent

We belong to no insurer and are tied to none.

Compensation disclosed

You pay nothing for the comparison and the support. If you take out a policy, Nexin may receive compensation from the insurer – and we disclose it.

Your data stays yours

We use your details for your comparison and your application. Nothing else.

Common questions

What newcomers ask most often.

Answered briefly. The full detail lives in our knowledge hub.

By when do I have to take out insurance?
Within three months of taking up residence in Switzerland. Meet the deadline and your cover is backdated to day one – and so are the premiums.
Am I uninsured between arriving and signing up?
No, as long as you meet the deadline: the contract applies retroactively from the day you took up residence. You submit bills from that period once you have signed up.
Can a basic insurer reject me because of an illness?
No. Basic insurance accepts you regardless of your age or health. That does not apply to voluntary supplementary insurance, where insurers are free to decline.
Does every family member need their own insurance?
Yes. Children and newborns are insured individually too. The contracts do not have to be with the same insurer; children have their own deductible levels and lower premiums.
Can I keep the insurance from my home country?
Only in the exceptional cases provided for by law, and only with an exemption granted by the cantonal authority. Without it, a foreign policy does not replace Swiss basic insurance.
Is Nexin free of charge?
You pay nothing for the comparison and the support. If you take out a policy, Nexin may receive compensation from the insurer. We disclose that compensation transparently.
